Of course the internet is filled with misinformation. Enter YouTube. You can learn anything by watching YouTube these days - what to do, and what not to do. News blurbs can lie, but pictures are worth 1000s of words.
My kudos to the Chris Berry, the "Idaho Painter"... he uses the internet the way it was intended !!!
Growing up with a Music and Science bent, I did not pay significant attention in Shop. I could complete the projects, but didn't get terribly excited about it. That is until the past few months. We are in now in home improvement nirvana!
First project was to replace a 30" double-hung window with a 12-foot bow window. I understand basic framing, but the internet provided step-by-step instruction on how best to support the second floor while *ripping off the back of our house* !!!
Second project was to design a roof for the bow window. While bow windows are less common, there were again step-by-step ideas on how to construct a bay window roof. Taking my Science skills (geometry and physics teachers, thank you very much), I laid out and constructed a 20-foot radius bow roof, with a 14 pitch. The roofers were amazed and asked if I hire out - I warned them I'm not an architect, but what a compliment.
Then we decided to repaint our vinyl-sided home. You've probably heard the expression "vinyl is final". Well, that is no longer true - thanks to Sherwin-Williams. Again, we turned to the internet - and in particular, YouTube. We certainly knew to prep the siding by pressure washing it, but knew the paint job for a 2-1/2 story home would be a huge undertaking. I thought to rent a cherry-picker, but thanks to YouTube we met Chris Berry and his painting company, B&K in Idaho. Chris shares his knowledge freely via video examples - again, why the internet is so valuable.
Of course, the prep work for an airless paint job takes time - and is totally worth it. As is renting a cherry-picker for such an undertaking. We were able to spray over 90% of our home in two autumn days!
Thank you to all who share their knowledge, and for the internet for delivering this media to those who search it out. Where a picture may be worth 1000 words, a video is worth many 1000 more! And a special thanks to Chris - we couldn't be happier with the end result !!!
